Two Passings to Note
CMG brother Bob Ames has gone to the great Gathering in the sky. He died of pneumonia on March 18 at 79 years.
Bob was born in Austin, Minnesota, the town where they make SPAM, even working at the plant one summer. He went to college in MN, receiving a finance degree. Eventually moving to LA, he started in the MGM studios finance department.  Later, he worked variously as a production manager, controller, and line producer on many TV series and movies including Daktari, Gentle Ben, Flipper, That’s Incredible, In Search Of With Leonard Nimoy, and the feature film Jaws 3D.
As controller of the budget, he had to be the tough guy. He did that so well that people were terrified of him. On the morning of his 50th birthday he got on the freeway to drive to work.  Halfway up the on-ramp he decided he couldn’t do it anymore.  So he called his boss and told him he was retiring that day. Shortly after, in Fall 1989, he discovered the CMG.  It changed his life and started him on his spiritual journey.
Bob’s partner in the 80s was Kurt.  They had been together for ten years, but Kurt got sick with AIDS.  As he was dying he told Bob they should meet in the afterlife under their favorite tree. Bob was really affected by his death, and volunteered for APLA, Shanti, and became involved with the AIDS Memorial Quilt community.  He ran a panel-making workshop at Hollywood United Methodist Church--making 70 panels himself--and went to Washington, DC as part of the first display of the Quit.
His current partner, Mike Parente, met him at a gay pride event.  Mike was in the booth for the LGBT car club, Bob was next door for Shanti.  Eventually Mike waved at Bob and Bob looked over his shoulder to see who Mike was waiving at.  They were together for 22 years and married in Feb 2016.
Bob was the kind of guy that would give you the shirt off his back.  And his pants too.  He served on numerous Gathering planning committees, the LA local events committee, and on the Board as a Gathering rep. Bob used to say that the most important stuff at a Gathering happened when two guys sat under a tree locked in conversation.
He loved his house and especially the backyard where he spent a lot of time sitting under the trees reading. Wanting to share that space, he and Mike hosted the pre- and post-Gathering pool parties for more than twenty years.  He would giggle in glee at having a house full of naked men.
Mike said that Bob didn’t think that people liked him, but that he had no idea how charming he was and how he touched other people’s lives. When Bob was near death, Mike told him it was time to go to sit under the tree.  He’s sitting there now, I’m certain, locked in conversation, with pauses now and again to giggle in glee.
(A memorial will be held April 8, 2 PM at Hollywood United Methodist Church, at Highland & Franklin Avenues.)     3/18/18

We are sad to report the passing of CMG brother Holt Bullock, who died March 1 of bone cancer.  He was 69 years old.  Holt was born and grew up near El Paso, Texas with three brothers and a sister.  He lived in many places over his lifetime: London, England; Michigan; Laguna Beach; Rogue River, Oregon; Palm Desert; San Francisco; and finally San Diego.
Holt got both his MD and DDS from USC and spent his career as an oral surgeon.  Seventy-five percent of his patients had HIV or AIDS, and he did a lot of pro-bono work for them.  He clearly was a powerful contributor to the gay community. His old-fashioned convertible was a hit at San Diego Pride, even if it died immediately afterwards and had to be towed.
Holt was a sports fan, a season ticket holder for the Padres, and attended Chargers and USC football games. He also loved to travel, and went around the world three times by ship, and had been to 73 countries. Holt attended Gatherings in both San Diego County and Santa Rosa, and was a Planner on CMG 88 (2016) in Julian, for which he created an exceptional promotional video:

Did You Know . . . ?

Are You Left or Right Brain Dominant?
                       ***Take the Test***

The human brain is an intricate organ. At approximately 3 pounds, it contains about 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion connections. Your brain is command central of all you think, feel, and do. It’s divided into two halves, or hemispheres. Within each half, particular regions control certain functions. The theory is that people are either left-brained or right-brained, meaning that one side of their brain is dominant. If you’re mostly analytical and methodical in your thinking, you’re said to be left-brained. If you tend to be more creative or artistic, you’re thought to be right-brained.

This theory is based on the fact that the brain’s two hemispheres function differently. This first came to light in the 1960s, thanks to the research of psychobiologist and Nobel Prize winner Roger W. Sperry. The left brain is more verbal, analytical, and orderly than the right brain. It’s sometimes called the digital brain. It’s better at things like reading, writing, and computations. The right brain is more visual and intuitive. It’s sometimes referred to as the analog brain. It has a more creative and less organized way of thinking.

We know the two sides of our brain are different, but does it necessarily follow that we have a dominant brain just as we have a dominant hand?

Find out which side dominates for you:
http://en.sommer-sommer.com/braintest/.

A team of neuroscientists set out to test this premise. After a two-year analysis, they found no proof that this theory is correct. Magnetic resonance imaging of 1,000 people revealed that the human brain doesn’t actually favor one side over the other. The networks on one side aren’t generally stronger than the networks on the other side.

Although the two sides function differently, they work together and complement each other. You don’t use only one side of your brain at a time. For example, the left brain is credited with language, but the right brain helps you understand context and tone. The left brain handles mathematical equations, but right brain helps out with comparisons and rough estimates. General personality traits, individual preferences, or learning style don’t translate into the notion that you’re left-brained or right-brained.

As scientists continue mapping the brain, we’re gaining more insight into which parts control necessary functions. This information is vital to advancing research into brain diseases and injuries, and how to recover from them.
