What a Movie’s Scenes Look Like
Straight Out of the Camera Versus In Theaters
Here’s an interesting look at the magic that goes into making movies look the way they do. The video above shows how scenes in one particular horror movie looked straight out of the camera, compared to the finished version after color grading. It’s like the video equivalent of the before-and-after examples photographers often share on the Web.
Motion picture cameras shoot images in what's called LOG. This photographs everything as a low-contrast, milky image. It allows the camera to capture all the detail in the dark areas as well as the bright areas. Then the colorist can darken or lighten the image as needed. He can keep or remove as much of that detail in the dark and light areas as desired, as well as manipulate the color overall.
As you watch the clips from this horror film, notice how the colorist can make what starts out as fully lit scenes into a dark and scary situation for the character. It's pretty amazing to see the difference. Enjoy.
