Events & Items of Interest

Binky’s List is Ten Years Old!
Sometime in 2009we're not sure exactly what month–Binky‘s List was born at CMG Los Angeles. Named in honor of our longest attending elder, Al-Binky Hoch, and created as a way for CMG men to tell their brothers about all things that were not officially connected to CMG. A way to legitimately use our entire mailing list to “spread the word” about anything that might be of interest to our members. Things like personal news, events of interest in your area, items for sale, apartments for rent, jobs wanted, personals notices, community links, etc. Over the last decade, more than 1000 notices have been shared with you–shared with all of us. That’s a pretty big number! Let’s keep that going. Please keep your submissions coming. And here’s to another decade of staying in touch and Connecting Men at the Heart.

Did You Know . . . ?

Deck the halls, girl!

Robert Downey Jr. in Home for the Holidays
Some LGBT movies to warm your holiday season.

Yes, it’s that festive time of the year again.  Time to curl up near the fireplace with your golden retriever, a rum toddy, and the TV remote control, to watch a fine LGBT holiday film.  There are many.  Some are completely gay, and some are simply wonderful holiday films with partial gay content, characters, or gay icons.  Here’s five to get you started.

Home for the Holidays (1995)
Dysfunctional families seem to always be at the heart of holiday films. This Jodie Foster-directed dramedy is no exception. And while the film is technically set during Thanksgiving, it might as well take place over Christmas. If bickering families are your thing, look no further. And keep an eye out for the quirky gay brother played by Robert Downey Jr. … though you can’t miss him.

Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)
Judy Garland!  Need we say more?  Gay icon Garland stars in this unforgettable movie musical directed by Vincente Minelli. It was on the set of this film that the two met –- resulting in the creation of the incomparable Liza! Bonus fact: “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” was written for this film.

The Family Stone (2005)
For large families that don’t get together much throughout the year, Christmas is a time to catch up on each other’s lives and fight about all the things they don’t have in common. In The Family Stone a family gets together to celebrate the holidays and there’s plenty of drama to go around. There’s the gay son and his partner who have just announced they’re ready to adopt a child, the oldest son who is unsure if he’s going to propose to his girlfriend who he’s brought home to meet the family, and the mother who is sick but doesn’t really talk about it. All the different personalities make for a chaotic story that reminds us a lot can happen in a year and how important it is to appreciate the holidays.

Scrooge & Marley (2012)
It just wouldn’t be the holidays without a version of A Christmas Carol — and this one takes a gay twist, telling the story of as a miserly piano bar owner who is visited by the usual host of spirits to guide him to altruism.  Its co-writer, Richard Knight Jr., was inspired by The Family Stone, above, to make a gay-centric holiday film — and this is it.

White Christmas (1954)
Starlet Rosemary Clooney stars alongside Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye in this beloved technicolor musical. The light-drag number performed by Crosby and Kaye during the “White Christmas Sisters Reprise” is positively delightful and remains a favorite.

Cuddle and Massage Wanted (Palm Springs)
I would love to attend the organized  cuddle and massage sessions in Palm Springs. Nothing sounds more fun than enjoying the company of like-minded guys. I am unable to attend based on other commitments.  I was hoping that  by reaching out to others, might help us come together enjoying this activity at a different time, place. I would love to help form a cuddle session and or a massage exchange.  A barrier is that I cannot host, so let’s share a room. Any ideas, comments, thoughts, are greatly appreciated.
